The Nikon D500 is one of the main models in the Nikon DX-format DSLR line. It features a robust physical construction, apt imaging capabilities, and a compact, smooth shape. It includes a 20.9MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 5 image processor, that make it very appealing to still and video shooters alike, with a rapid 10 fps continuous shooting rate and 4K UltraHD video recording. The sensor and the image processor can be integrated to obtain a sensitivity of up to ISO 51200, that can be taken to ISO 1640000 for low-light situations. In addition to its fast shooting performance, the Nikon D500 includes a Multi-CAM 20K 152-point AF system, with 99 cross-type points that allow accurate and fast subject tracking. Although the D500 is a compact model, it is not compact in its functionality and versatility.

On top of the imaging features, this powerful DSLR has a handling design that includes a 3.2", 2.36m-dot, tilting LCD touchscreen, that enables shooting from high and low angles. The included updated version of SnapBridge, that provides Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC and Bluetooth Low Energy technology, makes it possible to transfer images and videos to mobile devices wirelessly. The D500 is equipped with a durable magnesium alloy chassis that is dust and weather-sealed, making it ideal to work in harsh environments.

20.9MP CMOS Sensor and EXPEED 5 Image Processor

The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor, combined with the EXPEED 5 image processor, can offer a powerful mixture of high native sensitivity, increased image quality, and efficient performance. At native values, it is possible to work in different lighting conditions thanks to the sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200. Plus, it is possible to handle more challenging lighting conditions thanks to the expanded sensitivity range of ISO 50-1640000 (Lo 1 to Hi 5). All through the sensitivity range, the addition of resolution and sensor size are able to produce clean images and smooth color transitions with minimal noise.

On top of improving quality, the image processor increases the overall speed of the camera system, allowing a shooting rate of 10 fps, even when using autofocus and exposure metering. It is possible to record a maximum of 200 frames in a single burst, even if recording 14-bit lossless compressed NEF files. Plus, it is possible to shoot at slower continuous shooting rates as well as a Quite Continuous Mode for shooting at 3 fps, perfect for noise-sensitive areas.

4K UHD Video Recording

The Nikon D500 Body is capable of much more than just shooting stills. It can record videos in 4K UHD at 30, 25 and 24 fps frame rates and in Full HD / HD at up to 60 fps. It can also save movie files to the in-camera memory or save them as uncompressed files to an optional external recorder via HDMI out. There are three image area options available, depending on the desired quality and versatility of how the movie looks:

The 4K UHD movie image format provides a 1.5x gain in the effective focal length of the lens in use and is exclusive for recording in 4K 3840 x 2160.

The 1.3x-based movie image area provides a 1.3x cut of the DX sensor available for recording in Full HD and HD.

The DX-based movie image format uses the full with of the DX-format sensor and is available for recording in Full HD 1920 x 1080 and HD 1280 x 720. This setting provides the widest field of view and is recommended for shallow depth of field effects.

The Nikon D500 Body offers a wide range of sensitivities for recording videos in different light conditions, up to an expanded ISO 100-1640000. The sensitivity values can be adjusted manually through a dedicated movie-shooting menu. In order to gain control during post-production, the D500 includes a Flat Picture Control that can be used when recording to flatten the overall contrast curve.

The Electronic Vibration Reduction is available when recording handheld in Full HD and HD. This feature reduces the effects of camera shaking across the horizontal, vertical and rotational axes. Plus, the Active D-Lighting feature can also be used when shooting in Full HD and HD to maintain highlight and shadow detail in high-contrast scenarios.

The dedicated power aperture button (Pv) allows getting smooth, continuous exposure transitions when alternating between high and low light conditions, and the Auto ISO setting can help maintain consistent brightness when working in changing light situations. The Nikon D500 Body includes a built-in stereo microphone to record audio, as well as a 3.4mm stereo jack to connect an optional external mic for better control over quality. Both the built-in mic and the external mic can be adjusted to 20 volume levels and can be monitored live through a headphone jack with 30 different volume levels for playback.

On top of straight movie recording, the D500 offers time-lapse 4K UHD/30p recording for up to 9999 consecutive frames shot over the period of up one week.

153-Point Multi-CAM 20K Autofocus System

The speed and imaging capabilities of the Nikon D500 Body are matched by the apt Multi-CAM 20K autofocus system, with a total of 153 phase-detection points, including 99 cross-type sensors for better subject recognition and 55 points selectable points for improved compositional freedom. When used with a super telephoto lens and teleconverter, 15 of the points are compatible with an effective aperture of f/8 - including 9 selectable points - and all 153 points are compatible with effective apertures of f/5.6 or brighter.

On top of the high number of focus points, the D500 is equipped with a dedicated AF engine, with a quick response time to benefit tracking of fast-moving subjects, even when shooting at 10 fps. The AF engine helps enhanced focusing sensitivity: all points are able to focus at -3 EV and the center point is able to read at -4 EV, meaning it works in very low-light, low-contrast conditions.

To improve the versatility of the autofocus system, seven AF-area modes are available to support different types of subjects matter:

Single-Point AF: A single point is used to find focus.

Dynamic-Area AF: One primary single focus point is used to lock onto focus, and then the surrounding points are added for maintaining focus while tracking randomly moving subjects. This mode is available with 25, 72, or 153-point selections.

Group-Area AF: Small groups of AF points are treated as a single point for a wider field of recognition. This mode is well-suited to tracking faces or other detailed subjects.

3D-Tracking: Benefitting from a subject's color information, all 153 points are used to maintain focus on a moving subject while half-pressing the shutter button.

Auto-Area AF: All 153 points are used to quickly identify the main subject and any other recognizable faces, prioritizing these as portrait subjects.

On top of the various AF-area modes, the D500 has an AF lock-on function that makes tracking a subject much more efficient, and can be set with just two parameters: how fast the blacked shot AF response should be, and how steady the subject movement is. By setting these two parameters, the AF response can be optimized to perform at its best in a range of different subject situations.

Finally, the auto AF fine-tune function ensures the best possible focus for any mounted lens. Instead of relying on a photographing distance chart, this functions can get the precise focus manually in live view, and then have the AF system calibrate itself to the fine-tuned focus position as a way to reduce front and back focusing issues.

Body Design

The Nikon D500 Body includes a large 3.2" rear LCD monitor with a high 2,359k-dot resolution for high-quality, clear playback and live view shooting. The monitor is touchscreen, so that the menu navigation and settings control can be used intuitively while shooting. The touchscreen can also be used to manually choose a focus point or focus area to set the white balance from. The touchscreen also doubles as a keyboard for entering quick notes, copyright or IPTC information. Plus, its tilting design makes it easy to shoot from high and low working angles.

This camera is equipped with a bright pentaprism optical viewfinder that offers complete frame coverage and a 1.0x magnification. It also has an organic EL display system on the viewfinder that shows shooting information for a more comfortable adjustment of camera settings. The optical glass has enhanced coatings for augmented brightness, contrast, and color neutrality that make it more lifelike. The D500 is equipped with both SD and XQD memory card slots, and has numerous file saving capabilities, such as allowing overflow recording, in-camera file duplicating and permitting segregation between RAW and JPEG files between two cards.

The Nikon D500 Body has a robust magnesium alloy chassis that is dust and weather resistant, making it ideal to work in harsh environments.

The body of the D500 includes an ergonomic grip and a form factor shaped with the idea of helping handling for extended periods of time, and it is emphasized by anti-slip, textured controls and easy-to-open card slot covers. Plus, the majority of the buttons on the back of the camera are illuminated for greater visibility in low-light situations. There are two configurable Fn buttons, one of them on the front and the other one on the back, that can be assigned to any shooting control. The included battery is an EN-EL15a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It is CIPA-rated to last approximately 1240 shots per charge. To extend the shooting time, an optional MB-D17 Multi-Power Battery Pack is available.

SnapBridge Wi-Fi Connectivity

The Nikon D500 Body is equipped with built-in SnapBridge Wi-Fi connectivity to allow the transfer of images as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE - Bluetooth Low Energy technology - also allows communication between a smart device and the D500. The mobile device work from a distance, displaying a live view image from the camera and triggering the shutter. NFC - Near Field Communication - is also supported in this model, and it provides a fast a simple tap-to-connect method to pair the camera with mobile devices.

The D500 also supports transmission of image files via FTP server or computer with the WT-7A Wireless Transmitter, for those looking for a faster wireless performance.

Scene Recognition System and Exposure Metering

The Nikon D500 comes equipped with a 180k-pixel RGB sensor used by the Intelligent Scene Recognition System with 3D Color Matrix Metering III in order to evaluate and analyze scenes. This feature contemplates colors, brightness, contrast and distance to determine the optimal exposure and white balance settings to best render the scene.

The data from the Intelligent Scene Recognition System is stored and used to check against reference images to ensure consistent settings from image to image regarding exposure, white balance, i-TTL flash settings and subject-tracking AF performance.

Other Camera Features

There are three available types of auto white balance: Auto 0 maintains white values in any light situation; Auto 1 maintains color balance between the subject and the ambient; Auto 2 renders colors trying to maintain the natural aspect and retains the colors of different lightings.

Both still shooting and movie recording offer in-camera flicker reduction.

Depending on the output needs, there are three different RAW file sizes: RAW size medium and small are 12-bit lossless compressed NEF files whereas RAW large size is a 14-bit lossless uncompressed or compressed NEF file.

When using the live view, it is possible to set the white balance with the Spot White Balance control by simply pointing to the area in the frame that should be white. Plus, there are 6 preset white balance settings that can be stored for switching between different light sources easily.

The Nikon D500 also offers more intuitive and controllable wireless flash shooting. when paired with the radio-controlled Advanced Wireless Lighting system, also compatible with the optional WR-R10 Controller and the WR-A10 Receiver, along with the SB-5000.
